Bar or Bat Mitzvah is a two year learning process; and we are incredibly proud that the vast majority of our young people stay on to help teach younger pupils who follow them on their B’nei Mitzvah journey.

We meet on Friday afternoon from 4.30 pm. Our curriculum hour follows a programme of teenage learning that grows out of the interests of our students. We want our young people to have a great time, make friends, and come away with a deeper Jewish identity, a strong understanding of the history and realities of Israel, and what it means to be a Reform Jew. We see ethical development as central to this process. The second hour of our programme sees our young people working one-to-one with older teenage helpers, who teach them a carefully chosen set of blessings and prayers, and their Bar or Bat Mitzvah portion. Steve Levenson oversees and carefully monitors this process. Rabbis Shulamit Ambalu and James Baaden offer individual tutoring to our young people to prepare for the Bar or Bat Mitzvah itself. Charley Katan, our youth worker, is part of the Friday team, offering our older teenagers a secure and challenging teenage space where they can develop their leadership skills. An extended team of skilled volunteers is also available to offer one-to-one support.
